Acceleration surely goes up but you have to shift sooner. So a car with leader gears (Car A) will have more acceleration than one without (Car B). But Car A will have to shift at 65mph from second to third while Car B can continue until 72mph. In the 65mph to 75mph stretch, Car B will be faster. My theoretical analysis says there is almost no difference in a 20-120mph run. But in a 60-90mph run Car A is faster (3.85s vs 4.0s for Car B). Here are some plots/data from the analysis.
